Position Title: Community Organizing Intern

RightRides for Women’s Safety builds safer communities for women and LGBTQ individuals through community organizing, policy advocacy, direct service programs, and anti-violence education with the goal of fostering greater safety awareness and individual empowerment in New York City. We seek a motivated, dependable, detail-oriented individual with a strong commitment to social justice to work alongside the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate New Yorkers for Safe Transit coalition
  • Organize community education workshops and events
  • Pursue policy change activities
  • Track goal progress and outcomes
  • Represent NYFST/RightRides at public events and gatherings
  • Complete filing, photocopying, and general mailings related to the work

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A strong interest and experience in violence prevention, community organizing, and women’s and LGBTQ safety.
  • Ability to take direction, function independently yet work well with others, prioritize duties, manage time effectively, proactively meet deadlines, and be trustworthy and flexible.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet research
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework in a related field; knowledge of safety and anti-violence issues is a plus. Priority given to Juniors and Seniors.
  • Commitment of at least 10 hours per week for a period of no less than 12 weeks
  • Must be available during the following days/hours: Tuesdays/Thursdays 11AM – 3PM and/or Fridays 11AM – 6 PM. 


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This is an unpaid position; however, the Intern will gain a uniquely valuable experience with an award-winning, progressive nonprofit, as well as one-on-one mentorship, skills building opportunities, and networking contacts
  • RightRides for Women’s Safety will assist Intern and their educational institution in completing requirements for academic credit, and credit-seeking interns will receive priority
  • We maintain a professional, yet casual office environment in the Downtown Brooklyn area, close to major train lines.

  • Shape an innovative communications strategy to promote our programs and work
  • Research, plan, and implement online outreach around women's and LGBTQ safety (including blogs, social networks, web-based publications, and other online communities)
  • Develop web marketing and communications campaigns
  • Research and write articles and content for website
  • Pitch new ideas for projects and strategies
  • Put together and mail out press materials
  • Catalog media mentions and organize publications and video materials

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong interest and experience in violence prevention, community organizing, media, and women’s and LGBTQ safety.
  • Ability to take direction, function independently yet work well with others, prioritize duties, manage time effectively, proactively meet deadlines, and be trustworthy and flexible.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet research, and Social Networking; knowledge of basic HTML, web design, and Web 2.0 preferred
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework in a related field; knowledge of safety and anti-violence issues is a plus. Priority given to Juniors and Seniors.
  • Commitment of at least 10 hours per week for a period of no less than 12 weeks
